Hummingbird - Gourd Birdhouse
This dreamy hummingbird's playful yet exquisite design is the result of over 20 years of artistic collaboration between our designers and Pablo and Ana from Cochas, Peru. Its 1 ¼” opening makes it perfect for small birds like nuthatches, wrens, or bluebirds. It has drainage holes and protective exterior varnish. Expect slight variations in gourd shape, size and details. Assorted colors include natural and orange. To extend the life of this natural gourd, hang it in a well ventilated and dry area.
Gourds Become Art
Nature starts the story, Peruvian artists complete it.
Gourds, relatives of pumpkins and cucumbers, grow along Peru’s coast and in the jungle. After harvest, they are sun-dried and brought into the Andes, where each one is carefully selected for its shape and size.
Artists first sketch each design in pencil, then carve it by hand with fine chisels. Using pyrography, a traditional technique passed down through generations, they carefully use fire to burn and shade the surface, revealing rich natural tones of caramel, brown, and black.
Why Fair Trade Matters
For our team at Lucuma Designs, Fair Trade is more than a business model. It's a way of life that guides our daily decisions and inspires us to keep learning and evolving.
It lives in the relationships we've built over many years with the artist partners we know personally. Together, we've grown through trust and a shared commitment to building sustainable livelihoods and a better future for their families and communities.
Fair Trade is about much more than creating jobs. Through creative collaboration and by encouraging our artist partners to continually refine their craft and excel at what they do, we've built handmade collections our clients have come to trust year after year.
Ultimately, Fair Trade reminds us that business can be a force for good when it's guided by shared values and meaningful connections.
Lucuma Designs has been a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation since 1999.
