A smiling snowman is surrounded by his woodland friends: a bear, deer, fox, an owl and little birds. Charmingly hand-drawn, then carved and burned using a 4,000-year-old traditional carving and burning technique, Snowman in the Woods was co-designed and is exclusively made for Lucuma Designs. Gourds Become Art

Nature starts the story, Peruvian artists complete it.

Gourds, relatives of pumpkins and cucumbers, grow along Peru’s coast and in the jungle. After harvest, they are sun-dried and brought into the Andes, where each one is carefully selected for its shape and size.

Artists first sketch each design in pencil, then carve it by hand with fine chisels. Using pyrography, a traditional technique passed down through generations, they carefully use fire to burn and shade the surface, revealing rich natural tones of caramel, brown, and black.
